Minutes

CALL TO ORDER: Pam Fahrner called to order the May 14, 2013 meeting of the Garrett County Commission for Women (GCCW) at Clear Mountain Bank, Oakland, MD.

MINUTES: A copy of the March minutes was approved by those present.

TREASURER’S REPORT: The current balance is $3729.77. A check for the two Commissioners who attended HOF was just received.

OLD BUSINESS

EDUCATION: Application for the GCCW scholarships are due May 15th. As of today there is one applicant.

HISTORIAN: Joanna has clippings from the Hall of Fame along with a timeline for next year’s HOF. She will take those to the Library and put them in the GCCW folder.

LEGISLATION: Legislative issues for this session of the General Assembly: the death penalty was repealed, gas tax increase which will result in a .35¢ tax on a gallon of gas in MD by 2016, Gun Control passed which will result in more types of guns on the list, finger printing and criminal background checks required, a $50 registration fee every ten years and training required which costs $250. The Fracking Ban was defeated. The Marcellus Shale Study must be completed in 2014. Disparity funding for GC approved.

HALL OF FAME: Joanne reported our expenses exceeded our income for HOF by $98.00. We paid for 50 meals. Joanne suggested we keep the cost per ticket at $20 next year. The date for the 2014 HOF was set for April 5, 2014 and Dutch’s was confirmed for that date. Ruth Umbel volunteered to chair the HOF for 2014. A discussion was held regarding invitations for past inductees. Name tags will be printed for the new inductees and everyone else will write out their own.

WEB SITE: Pam will check on the possibility of Judy Carbone hosting a GCCW Web site.

DOVE CENTER: It was decided at the March meeting that the next bill board must be on Rt. 219 and a bill board is now open. Dorothy volunteered to work on PR for the Dove Center if needed. Pam will be attending their Board Meeting on the 15th and will let them know of Dorothy’s offer.

LIBRARY WINDOW: Many thanks to Joanne for doing the window at the library. It was decided to donate the picture of Miss Garrett to the Historical Society.

ERA LECTURE: At the March meeting Ruth Umbel suggested having Sen. Getty from Carroll County speak on Women’s Suffrage. Judy Carbone had offered to contact the college about a date in the fall. Katherine Lee will check with Judy about a date.

NEW BUSINESS

OFFICERS: Pam Farhner has put her house on the market and will be moving when it sells. A motion was made by Elizabeth Huxford and seconded by Dorothy Walters to have Pam stay on as President until she moves, to have Joanne Harsh serve as 1st Vice President and Ruth Umbel serve as 2nd Vice President. Ruth would be available to cover for Joanne when she is out of the area. Three additional members are needed. Ruth will ask Robin McGill, Terry will ask Jeannette Fitzwater and Pam will ask Jean Neff.

OTHER BUSINESS

COMMISSION FUNDING: A funding request was submitted to the Commissioners for the GCCW in the amount of $3000. The check will be paid in July.

NEXT MEETING: The next meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, July 2, 2013 at 4 p.m. at Clear Mountain Bank, Oakland.

ADJOURNMENT: The meeting was adjourned at 5:00 p.m.
