Minutes

CALL TO ORDER: Ruth Umbel called to order the June 6, 2016 meeting of the Garrett County Commission for Women (GCCW) at Garrett College, McHenry, MD.

PROGRAM: Women and Unconventional Natural Gas Development and Production (Fracking) by Rebecca Rehr, MPH and Ann Bristow, Ph.D. from the Maryland Environmental Health Network and Concerned Health Professionals of Maryland. Rebecca and Ann presented a very informative power point that touched on social and health issues for women and children that may result from “Fracking.” A copy of the power point has been emailed to all members of the GCCW.

PRAYER: Sherri Fredlock offered the prayer.

PLEDGE: BJ Gallagher led the Pledge to the Flag.

MINUTES: Minutes from the April 4, 2016 meeting were approved as corrected. Under Old Business, Change Rare to Rehr and under Membership change end of June to end of September.

TREASURER’S REPORT: The current balance in the account is $1242.60. Checks have been written for the HOF expenses and to the scholarship winners. A motion was made, seconded and was carried to accept the Treasurer’s Report.

OLD BUSINESS:

After the April meeting, Judy emailed information regarding the Maryland Legislative Agenda for Women to the GCCW. Benefits of membership in the MLAFW were discussed. A motion was made by Joanne with a second from Cherri for the GCCW to pay the $75 membership fee and to participate in the MLAFW. The motion carried. Sherri will be the contact person.

A discussion was held regarding the program on Fracking and what the next step for the GCCW should be. The Legislative Study Group will be holding a public meeting in Garrett County and everyone is encouraged to attend. It was suggested that the Commission take a balanced approach to Fracking since it is a very controversial issue. Judy will compile a list of questions that the Commission would like answered by the industry.

COMMITTEE REPORTS:

HALL OF FAME: 80 people attended the HOF. This was a very successful event. Ruth will give Judy the HOF Outline. Many thanks to Ruth for her dedication to this project over the years.

SCHOLARSHIP: BJ, Sherri and Robin will be putting an article and photo in the paper.

LEGISLATION:

WEB: The site is up to date. BJ will be adding a scholarship picture.

PUBLICITY: A chair will need to be appointed.

MEMBERSHIP: Jeannette Fitzwater is interested in joining the Commission. She will attend the August meeting. After a vote from the Commission, Terry will send a letter to the Board of Commissioners with her bio asking that she be appointed.

NEXT MEETING: The next meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, August 2, 2016 at 5:00 – 6:30 p.m. at Garrett College.
